How it works

How to budget a trip in two currencies

Most trip budgets fail at the same spot: the hotel is in euros, the flights in dollars, and your bank account in something else entirely. This calculator keeps it simple: enter daily costs in the destination currency, one-time costs like flights in whatever currency you book them, and it converts everything into your home currency at live mid-market rates - the same open data the SumiQ app uses.

The buffer matters more than people think: on real trips, 10-20% of spending is things you did not plan. Budgeting for surprises is what keeps the budget alive after day three.

On the trip itself, this is exactly what SumiQ is for: say "lunch 240 baht" and it lands in your list, converted into your home currency automatically.

FAQ

Which exchange rate does this use?
Live daily mid-market rates from an open-source currency API - the same source the SumiQ app uses. Card payments usually add a small markup on top, which the buffer helps absorb.
How big should the buffer be?
10% is a sensible floor for short city trips; 20% for longer trips or destinations where you'll pay cash and tips. If nothing goes wrong, you come home with a bonus.
Should I include flights in the daily budget?
No - keep one-time costs (flights, visas, insurance, intercity trains) separate from daily costs. They behave differently: one is fixed before you leave, the other you control on the road.
How do I track spending during the trip?
That's what SumiQ does best: say what you spent in any of 27+ currencies and it converts everything into one total on your iPhone - no accounts, works offline for entry.
